The Somnambulist series is meant to be accompanied by written pieces, but I’m not ready to share them just yet (if ever). It is the obsessive telling and retelling of a story—a true story—caught somewhere between memory and dream, reality and illusion. Somnambulist is a ghost story.

I saw them, the three selves: the fool, the child, and the critic.

‘Self Portrait’ 2018

Chalk, charcoal, and water on paper 36”x 212”

I was asked to make a self portrait using the geometry of the Vitruvian Man. Rather than box myself in, I chose to take up as much space as I could.
The measurements are based entirely on measurements of my body. The dimensions of the image, 212” were taken from my arm span. Imagine the arm span as the diameter of a circle, the circle being the space can take up at any given time.
Diameter x 3.14… = circumference. Make that a line.

Hang paper at highest point of reach on wall with bare feet
Cover eyes with a blindfold, keep the lights on. The fabric must be sheer enough to let in some light
Cover hands in chalk dust. Start from top right corner: mark paper with both hands the length of an exhale
Chalk dust between each set
Move up the length of an inhale
Repeat until you reach the far left side
Pour water on the floor: wet hands
Start from top left corner: mark paper with both hands the length of an exhale
Wet hands between each set
Move up the length of an inhale
Repeat until you reach the far right side
Find where your wrist rests on the paper with fingers at top
Mark with piece of chalk. Still wearing the blindfold, feel your way across the page: try to keep a straight line
Repeat with top of head, centre of eye, point of nose, mouth, chin, shoulder
With charcoal in your non-dominant hand, move from left to right over the same measurements
Take chalk in right hand
Move from right to left
Focus on the sound of ringing in your ears: graph it
Listen to the sound of the room: graph it
Repeat moving left to right
Wet hands on floor
Record the sounds again moving right to left
Repeat left to right
Take off the blindfold
