The Art of Play
The audio file is a recording of my “language.” The clip discusses the process through which I expanded the visual language to a spoken one. I’m still not sure what to do with it, but I am certain I will continue to develop it over time.
I am fascinated with the notion of working with/in a language that can be written but not read, spoken but not understood.
COPPER
Experimenting with copper oxide and copper carbonate. The consistency is similar to that of paint. I am exploring the range of colours and how they behave over time.
LIGHT
I have been exploring how light effects the way a piece is read/perceived. Low lighting and backlight are used to change the nature of an image. I work in many layers, some opaque, some translucent. When lit from behind, the hidden structure of the image—and its process—is illuminated.
WEEPING
The images show fabric that has been soaked in liquid rust. The rust “ink” has a very high salinity. When the materials dry, they have a slightly textured surface.
In high humidity, the fabric draws in moisture from the air. Water beads on the surface and eventually “weeps” down onto the paper below. As humidity decreases, the paper dries revealing a pattern of crystalline salt, stained with the rust from the fabric. As humidity rises again, the paper itself begins to weep.
I am interested in exploring this process further through installation. I am fascinated by the concept of works that change with weather and time. The “performance” is further documented by the product of the event. This product/material/image is then also subject to change.
